Deja Dishmon is learning Microsoft Word step by step on a laptop brought to her third grade class. The Donaghue Elementary student follows a demonstration on a screen conducted by one of CPS’ technology coordinators. While “tech coordinators” often only have time to be troubleshooters, many say the most vital work they do is coaching teachers on how to integrate technology into the classroom. Still, many teachers and administrators say their technology needs are not being met. About 40 percent of schools recently surveyed said tech support was “inadequate to support classroom needs,” according to Catalyst Chicago. Schools said the largest barrier was money. The amount of computers in schools can vary dramatically. While Donaghue has one student per computer, Penn Elementary in North Lawndale has about 20 students per computer.
