CHICAGO MATTERS: Inside Housing

Town Meetings

Audio On-Demand and Descriptions

WBEZ Chicago Public Radio is hosting two town meetings in the Chicago area to discuss issues related to housing.

Panelists 47th Ward Alderman Gene Schulter (left) and Richard Hankett, executive director of the Ravenswood Community Council, respond to comments from the audience.

Gentrification in Lincoln Square Audio
Traditionally a middle income neighborhood, Lincoln Square is now becoming gentrified and many of its long time residents, including families and the elderly, can no longer afford to live here. At this town meeting, a panel of experts and an audience of residents explore how affordable middle income housing can be made available during this area's skyrocketing real estate boom.

Housing Challenges in the South Suburbs Audio
Over 84 percent of renters with Section Eight vouchers move south of the city, many to suburbs such as Hazelcrest and Chicago Heights. We'll discuss the concerns of renters and homeowners over the impact of Section Eight housing in the south suburbs, and we'll explore what some communities are doing to promote racial tolerance.
