CHICAGO MATTERS: Education
Matters
With
the economy demanding an increasingly skilled workforce, how well are
Chicago-area schools serving us? WBEZ Chicago Public Radio explores answers
to that question during the 2001 Chicago Matters series Education Matters.
Through visits to numerous classrooms, Chicago Public Radio correspondents
uncovered both our schools' persistent problems and innovative efforts
to improve them. Bilingual and special education, home-schooling and charter
experiments, achievement and funding gaps are some of the topics addressed
during this years special series.
This is the twelfth
year for the award-winning Chicago Matters series, which is a partnership
among WBEZ Chicago Public Radio, Channel
11, The Chicago
Reporter and The
Chicago Public Library. This year's special participant is Catalyst,
the journal of school reform published by The Community Renewal Society.
Chicago Matters is made possible through a grant from the Chicago Community
Trust, Chicago's community foundation.
The series of 20
reports, 12 personal essays, four documentaries, two town meetings, and
a special program on jazz education takes a broad look at our education
system and what is being done to improve it.
Cassette tapes
of the individual "Chicago Matters: Education Matters" segments
are available by calling 312.832.3333. The entire series is available
on cassette tapes at all of the Chicago Public Libraries and some suburban
libraries.
