Administrators at East High say part of the reason truancy went down last year has to do with an effort to engage more incoming freshmen. The school has created a sort of cocoon for ninth graders on the second floor. Administrators hope that by isolating freshmen—and encouraging teachers to build close relationships with them—ninth graders won’t get lost in the transition to high school.
