Gospel: The Music and the Message of Black History is
an Eight Forty-Eight series exploring the praise and
power of the African American genre every Monday during Black
History Month.
Chicago's involvement in the development of gospel singing
goes back to the great black migration of the late 1800s.
Gospel music was born during the period of the American slave
trade and its roots can be traced back five centuries. The
songs provide comfort for the oppressed and those fighting
for civil rights.
The series features the sounds and opinions of a variety
of people, both young and old, who are involved in the music.
Throughout the month Eight Forty-Eight producers and
contributors will highlight other areas of black history from
poetry to the question of reparations.
