Liberia has among the highest maternal mortality rates in the world.
One of the nice people I’ve come to know through our
Global Activism
series is Jane Roberts, a retired French language teacher from California.
In 2002, when the U.S. announced it was with holding 34 million dollars from the UNFPA, the UN population Fund, Jane Roberts decided she would help lead an effort to make up the difference. Her organization,
34 Million Friends
of the UNFPA, had the idea to get 34 million Americans to donate a dollar to make up the difference.
34 million friends was recently featured in the Nick Kristof/Sheryl WuDunn bestseller,
Half the Sky
