A school girl receives a braille kit for her education.
It’s Thursday, and time for our Global Activism series. Every week, we hear about an individual who’s trying to make the world a better place.

According to the World Health Organization, 38 million people around the globe are blind. Due to a lack of resources, more than 90 percent of the visually-impaired live in low and middle income countries. Manu Vora is president and founding director of the Blind Foundation for India, a non-profit based group based in Naperville, Illinois.

He told Jerome the jarring statistics on blindness in India.

Dear Mr. Manu Vora: It is impressive to listen to your interview in the Chicago Public Radio. I have personally witnessed the power of media when I was raising millions of dollars during Tsunami fundraising in 2004, and 2005. We have also seen media’s importance in Presidential elections to elect President-elect Obama. No doubt, this is a best way people would start learning about the Blind Foundation of India, its ideas, by which donors and ‘doers’ would receive information about the existence of your importance, but has not yet been informed or formed an opinion upon. Often, it is a best way to make public aware of Blind Foundation of India and create an interest in its service to the blind. This way of building awareness through Chicago Public Radio and other media outlets is extremely important, because a volunteer may not agree readily to an unknown organization or service. So, I am sure if you continue this path you will see lot of awareness, and interest, and in turn, it would create a desire to help the blind and people would start taking action and follow your leadership. I wish nothing but the best for your continued endeavors. Best Regards, Malleswar Tuthika (Rao) Financial Advisor (630) 776 5870

Dear Manu, Keep up the great work. You are a wonderful example of a private initiative that is doing a great deal of good. Imagine the benefit that $20 does in removing a cataract and making someone able to see well.
