To round off our meal now, we’ll discuss the forces that determine what wine ends up in our glass. While wine is produced in nearly every country today, the politics that determine where and how wine is produced and sold differ greatly.
Unlike France and other big wine producing countries, states in the U.S. play a large role in wine distribution. All 50 states set their own rules and regulations for the transportation of wine from wineries or out of state retailers to consumers. Tyler Coleman writes about wine on his blog Dr. Vino. He is the author of Wine Politics: How Governments, Environmentalists, Mobsters, and Critics Influence the Wines we Drink. Tyler traces state regulation of wine back to the Prohibition era.
