A catch from an illegal bottom trawler in Ivory Coast. Bottom trawling can cause enormous damage to the environment.
We’ll continue our examination of the dinner plate with a discussion of fish. Two years ago, a study published in the journal ???Science” claimed that there will be virtually no fish left in the seas by the middle of the century if we don’t change the way we fish.

Scientists and economists are working to reform fishing methods and regulate the amount of fishing that occurs in fragile stock areas. But they are finding that the current situation for the fish industry is grim. A study released last month jointly by the World Bank and the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization found that the world’s fishing fleets are losing 50 billion dollars each year because of depleted fish stocks and poor management. Kieran Kelleher is the Fisheries Team Leader in the World Bank's Agriculture and Rural Development Department. He co-authored the study called “The Sunken Billions: The Economic Justification for Fisheries Reform.”
