U.S. Lags Behind on Human Development Index

Calculate your own human development level with the American Human Development Project's Well-O-Meter

Americans spend more on health care per person than any other country. But a new report found that Americans lives shorter lives than citizens of almost every other developed nation.

The American Human Development Project released the report “Measure of America” last month with the support of Oxfam America, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Conrad Hilton Foundation.

Modeled after the United Nations Development Programme’s global Human Development Report, the new report combines existing statistics on health, education, and income in the U.S. into one measurement.

This measurement can then be easily compared to the human development indexes of other nations. Sarah Burd-Sharps is the co-author of “Measure of America: American Human Development Report 2008-2009”
