Dueling Critics: Esperanza Rising
|
|
Esperanza is a young girl from a wealthy family in Mexico in the 1930s. When tragedy strikes she and her mother flee north of the border. Now among the migrants and workers in the California fields, Esperanza must learn to look forward, not backward, and adjust her attitudes about status and class.
The play Esperanza Rising is adapted from a popular novel for young people by Pam Munoz Ryan. It kicks off Goodman Theatre’s fourth Latino Theater Festival. Here to tell us how Esperanza Rising translates to the stage, and to talk about the other offerings at this year’s festival, are Eight Forty-Eight’s dueling critics Jonathan Abarbanel and Kelly Kleiman.

I second Jonathan's reccomendation for TERMEN VOX MACHINA at Oracle. It was awesome, very ambitious. Everyone should go see it - if the theater can fit them all in!

Despite the fact that I now live in L.A. I never miss a chance to see show at Oracle whenever I'm visiting. They never cease to amaze me and Termen is incredibly innovative and amazing! I only wish I could have seen it again. It comes highly recommended all the way from L.A.!

I saw the show a week ago and was blown away. I saw Tape there last year and am so impressed with Oracle's different approach with all the multimedia. I'll be back!

This was one of the most creative shows I've ever seen! The brilliant use of dis/re-embodied voices, disappearing characters, creative lighting effects, and a complex plot lends to this film-noir sci-fi stage play. I've seen it twice and would love to see it again.
