World of Gangs

Early yesterday morning, two men in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood were killed in a drive-by shooting. Another drive-by Sunday night on the south side left a college journalism student dead. Last year, Chicago saw over 400 murders. At least 40 percent are believed to be gang-related. The Chicago Police Department has recently stepped up efforts to fight gang violence. But John Hagedorn says he doesn’t expect the CPD to be successful, because they’re taking the wrong approach. He’s a sociologist at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the author of A World of Gangs: Armed Young Men and Gangsta Culture.

In the first of two conversations on crime in Chicago, Eight Forty-Eight’s Richard Steele recently spoke with Hagedorn. Hagedorn says that fixing the problem in Chicago must begin with an understanding of young people and their culture.

Hagedorn will be at 57th Street Books in Hyde Park tomorrow night at 6:00 to discuss his research and sign copies of A World of Gangs.
