Extended Conversation with Heather Raffo

Actress Heather Raffo trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and performed with The Acting Company and at the Old Globe Theatre, but it’s her work as a playwright that’s made her the toast of the theatrical world in the U.S. and abroad. Raffo’s 9 Parts of Desire, a one-woman meditation on Iraqi women in war and peace, ran for nine sold-out months in New York, and has been touring for the past three years with the show. The daughter of an Iraqi father and an American mother, Raffo puts her blonde Midwestern looks at the service of exploding stereotypes about the alien Middle East and the Other. Now, Evanston’s Next Theatre Company and the Museum of Contemporary Art have brought 9 Parts of Desire to Chicago.
