Cook County Commissioners Approve Budget

Cook County commissioners have approved a $3 billion budget for next year. Reports say the budget cuts about $32 million in spending. It takes a sales tax cut into account.
Just three days ago, a dozen commissioners approved reducing the sales tax by a half percent. Under a new state law, that's enough support to withstand a veto from Board President Todd Stroger, who says the county needs the money to keep its health clinics and hospitals open. He says the sales tax cut will cost the board even more come 2011.
In recent years, commissioners have pushed approving a budget to the absolute limit, waiting until the last minute to meet their legal deadline. But this year, with the budget complete and the February primary approaching, most commissioners can now focus on re-election campaigns.
