Chicago-based Lutheran Headquarters Lays Off More Than 40
|
 |
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is the largest Lutheran denomination in the United States. So when the ELCA’s Church Council announced recently that it was cutting its budget and eliminating more than 40 full-time positions at its national office here in Chicago, tongues started to wag. Some have criticized the church for getting rid of high level positions in areas dealing with diversity and multicultural outreach. A spokesperson for the ELCA couldn’t be reached for comment. Religion writer Susan Hogan covers ELCA-related news at her blog Pretty Good Lutherans. She has more on the layoffs.

Really? You couldn't reach a spokesperson for the ELCA? How hard did you try?

Dear Chris,
Thanks for your question. One of our producers, did in fact, contact the ECLA communications department as early as 12:30 p.m. Monday when work began on this segment. In one of four messages, the producer did mention that the show needed a response by the end of the workday Monday. Unfortunately, the ECLA representative was not able to reach us until after that, making it too late to get response. We have reached out to the ECLA now and have invited them to offer a response to any inaccuracies or concerns they might have heard. We strive to offer both sides to every story but often are constrained by the production deadlines of our show. We do, however, inform any potential guests of these constraints. Thanks.

For accuracy: it's ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America), not ECLA.
