Access to a range of housing options is a core component of sustainable communities and economic competitiveness. Across the nation, employers are forging vital partnerships with state and local governments to create viable housing solutions. This MPC Roundtable discusses local workforce housing successes, and explores opportunities to shape federal investments to promote more livable communities.

Panelists:

Dorothy Shaw, Director of State & Local Affairs for Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding. Based in Pascagoula, Miss., Ms. Shaw shares her company’s successful experience with its employer-assisted housing program, demonstrating how this versatile strategy is serving employees and advancing community goals in both high-cost New York and Katrina-ravaged Mississippi.

Terry Peterson, the appointed Chairman of the Board for the Chicago Transit Authority, and Vice-President of Government Affairs at Rush University Medical Center. Mr. Peterson discusses the hospital’s support for workforce housing and “live near work” solutions, including its role in Reconnecting Neighborhoods.

Janice Morrissy, Director of Housing Initiatives for the South Suburban Housing Collaborative. Ms. Morrissy describes the strategic approach more than 20 south suburban municipalities have taken to jointly address the challenge of foreclosures in their communities, including the important role of private sector partners.

Tom Morsch, Managing Director for Scott Balice Strategies, and Lake Forest City Council member. Mr. Morsch provides insight on a new workforce housing development in his north suburban community and other promising opportunities to support sustainable communities on the North Shore.

Recorded Friday, October 23, 2009 at Metropolitan Planning Council Conference Center.
