Deficiencies in Illinois' Refugee Resettlement Policy

The recent UAO report shows Africans to be the most educated and fastest growing immigrant community in Illinois.

Illinois is one of the top destinations for refugee resettlement in the United States. However, a report released last week by the United African Organization says Illinois’s refugee resettlement programs are in crisis. The United African Organization, or UAO, is based here in Chicago. They assessed the refugee resettlement process through surveys, interviews, and focus groups conducted among African refugees and refugee service providers. Lisa Simeone is with the UAO. She’s one of the authors of the study. Simeone says there are a number of reasons why the UAO felt it needed to take a closer look at refugee resettlement issues.
