U.S. Steel Prepares For Tighter Requirements

U.S. Steel Corporation in Gary may soon have to abide by stricter rules when it comes to the amount of pollution it dumps into Lake Michigan.

Officials at the steel giant say the company is ready to comply with new state and federal requirements that could go into place by next year.

Under a proposed draft permit, U.S. Steel would have to reduce the amount of pollution it dumps into Lake Michigan and the Grand Calumet River.

U.S. Steel held a forum last night in Gary to inform the public about the permit.

Company spokeswoman Courtney Boone.

BOONE: The requirements of the permit are going to be difficult. They are more stringent and they will likely require some sort of financial investment. Of what type we don’t know yet.

U.S. Steel is operating under a 15-year-old permit.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management, or IDEM, issued its version of the draft permit last month.

The public will have a chance to comment on it at a hearing Nov. 18th.

IDEM is expected to finalize the permit by early next year.
