Court Delays Abortion Notification Law Yet Again

American Civil Liberties Union attorney Lorie Chaiten won a temporary restraining order in front of Cook County Circuit Court Judge Daniel A. Riley. (WBEZ/Kate Gardiner)
The enforcement of a controversial Illinois abortion law has been put on hold again. The law requires doctors to tell under-aged girls' parents before performing abortions.

But a judge issued a temporary restraining order stopping enforcement of the law on Wednesday. Attorney Lorie Chaiten represents the American Civil Liberties Union's reproductive rights division.

CHAITEN: Young women who are forced to tell their parents about their unintended pregnancy and about their abortion decision are in fact abused, kicked out of their homes and left homeless.

Chaiten says the requirement interferes with privacy rights guaranteed by the Illinois Constitution.

But anti-abortion groups say the law encourages dialogue between teenaged girls and their parents. The case is scheduled to be in court November 19.
