A United Nations housing specialist is on a fact-finding trip in Chicago to assess the city’s public housing.

Racquel Rolnik is a special rapporteur on the right to adequate housing. The Brazilian is an independent expert appointed by the UN Human Rights Council.

Rolnik is visiting several local public housing developments and talking to officials.

This morning she toured Cabrini-Green.

ROLNIK: The complaints I received so far before coming here were all related to the demolition of public housing and they came from different cities in the U.S.

Rolnik is touring several cities, including Atlanta and New Orleans. She’s looking at foreclosures, Katrina, homelessness and displacement of residents.

Groups like the Coalition to Protect Public Housing wrote her letters about the direction of Chicago’s plan to revamp public housing.

Rolnik will give a report on U.S. housing before the United Nations General Assembly in March.
