New Economic Data Shows Improvement

New economic data relased on Monday shows some signs recovery could be on its way.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago released two datasets Monday, showing improved economic activity in the nation and the Midwest. The National Association for Business Economics also released a survey showing U.S. companies expect to do more hiring than job cutting over the next six months, a first since the recession started.

William Strauss is an economist at Chicago’s Federal Reserve Bank.

STRAUSS: These more recent reports seem to be suggesting that we have now entered the recovery phase of our business cycle.

Strauss says it is possible the Midwest will lag behind some of the improvements being seen nationally as the manufacturing sector remains weak.
