The artist Nancy Spero died recently, at the age of 83. Spero’s paintings and drawings were politically charged and responded to the violence of the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War. Spero, who was studied at the School of the Art Institute, was probably best known for The War Series, which mixed painting, drawing and collage. Throughout her career, Spero’s art was sustained by an exploration of feminism and the experiences of women. She co-founded Artists in Residence, the first women’s cooperative gallery in the U.S. James Yood, art critic and faculty member at the School of the Art Institute, talks about Spero's legacy.
