Illinois House Minority Leader Tom Cross says eliminating free rides for seniors is one way to help the Chicago Transit Authority's budget.
CROSS: My mom comes downtown. Sorry, mom, but she probably ought to pay. They're doing okay. And I don't think, quite frankly, that they'd resent that. And I think that in this economic time, and really for that matter in any time, I don't think it's fair for those that can pay in a situation like that to get a free ride.
Cross says there shouldn't be a complete repeal of the program and suggests free rides based on need.
The CTA estimates the senior rides will cost the agency $30 million this year and $60 million in 2010. The transit agency is asking state lawmakers for more money to help close a $300 million budget gap.
