Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says Illinois state lawmakers should approve more funding for public transportation.
The Chicago Transit Authority is recommending a $.075 fare increase to $3 for train rides. Daley says if outside funding doesn't come through, commuters will likely bear the burden.
DALEY: This is only proposed. And like anything else, that's the last resort. And no one wants to see fare increases or service cuts, but they are in a very difficult position.
The CTA says revenue from sales and real estate taxes have fallen significantly during the recession. The agency is appealing to state lawmakers for funding to avoid cost cutting measures.
