What a TIF District Could Be

Many Chicagoans are disappointed with what TIF has – or hasn’t – wrought. But, John Paul Jones, who has been a frequent critic himself, says the tactic could be great for neighborhood development. He’s the former community outreach director for the now defunct Neighborhood Capital Budget Group. It was a coalition of community groups that long advocated for neighborhood development. Now he’s a community organizer in Chicago’s Roseland neighborhood.

Well over 2,000 people signed an online petition to protest the Wilson Yard TIF and many community residents are financially supporting a lawsuit to make themselves heard by Ald. Shiller. What's worse has been that this TIF development has not been supportive of best practice standards utilized by certified urban planners. The housing portion goes against HUD standards and the warnings from the traffic study and police have been ignored.
