Wilco (the interview)

Bookmark and Share Share

You might not expect a band’s self-titled album to be released 15 years after the group’s formation, but Wilco isn’t your regular rock band. And their latest album Wilco (the album)—released today—stands as a declaration of the group’s identity, meticulously cultivated over the years by frontman Jeff Tweedy. Tweedy sat down with Alison Cuddy to discuss the new record and the controversy surrounding the band’s past relationship with recently-deceased former member, Jay Bennett.

alex pino, new mexico/ uptown // Tuesday, June 30, 2009 @ 11:44 AM

nice to be able to feel so connected to chicago culture/ music even though we are hundreds of miles away.

Burt Chide, Uptown // Tuesday, June 30, 2009 @ 12:41 PM

How does a band from Chicago not play a show in Chicago to promote their new album?

Andrew, Kansas City, MO // Tuesday, June 30, 2009 @ 1:55 PM

Relax, the tour's not over. They're still in the midst of their summer tour, which was booked long before the album was out. They're booking dates for fall 2009 right now, and my guess is that they'll hit Chicago then. Deal.

Viktor, Sweden // Tuesday, June 30, 2009 @ 5:34 PM

Wow I Love Conor Oberst. No, seriously, this album drops in Sweden in 10 hours. Can't wait!

charles, birmingham/al // Tuesday, June 30, 2009 @ 9:13 PM

glad to hear tweedy's opinion on the album from one of the greatest american rock bands of all time. their ability to maneuver/explore different types of musical styles is remarkable and should be applauded by everyone. great job guys.

lee, atlanta // Wednesday, July 01, 2009 @ 9:34 AM

Great interview. Sounds like Tweedy is in good spirits. Can't wait for the dvd. Looking forward to seeing Wilco in NYC.

marcelo urânia, curitiba, pr, brazil // Wednesday, July 01, 2009 @ 10:20 AM

jeff, we look forward to wilco (the show). :)

Taylor, Uptown // Wednesday, July 01, 2009 @ 1:16 PM

WHY do people always complain about artists like Wilco or Andrew Bird "not playing Chicago". They LIVE HERE. We get treated better than any other location. What city got a 5 night stand of Wilco? Chicago. What city had a free Andrew Bird show in an amazing amphitheatre? Chicago. So next time you feel like complaining about a Chicago artist not playing here just put a sock in it. Thanks. :)

tamara, brunswick, australia // Wednesday, July 01, 2009 @ 5:47 PM

the band, the album, the song...you've hit the holy trinity jackpot wilco, start a new religeon, change the world!...a positively lovely album, great work.

Tom Bowman, Newton nc // Wednesday, July 01, 2009 @ 9:03 PM

joelin'du, Chicago // Thursday, July 02, 2009 @ 10:36 AM

regarding "Burt Chide, Uptown // Tuesday, June 30, 2009 @ 12:41 PM How does a band from Chicago not play a show in Chicago to promote their new album?" if you know anything about WIlco they typically play their shows in Chicago at the end of their tour in Novemberish and they usually play for an entire weekend. dont be a noob O.o

Lisa, Manteca, CA // Thursday, July 02, 2009 @ 3:20 PM

Loved the show at Greek Theater in Berkeley. Magical night under perfect "California Stars".

Joe, St. Louis, MO // Thursday, July 02, 2009 @ 4:29 PM

Although I'm of the mindset that Wilco can do no wrong, I've been a bit underwheled by their last few albums. But (the Album) rivals Yankee Hotel in its mastery. They've found the perfect balance between their rock roots and their experimental tendencies. And, as usual, the lyrics could stand alone as beautiful poems. Great album!

Rebecca, sf bay area, ca // Thursday, July 02, 2009 @ 5:50 PM

Saw the two Nor Cal shows (Greek in Berkeley and smaller, more intimate Mtn Winery in Saratoga) and they were fantastic. Really tight and the right amount of banter from Tweedy. Sansone and Cline doing dueling guitars was really sweet. Great energy, really infectious!

Terry O', Oak Park // Thursday, July 02, 2009 @ 8:19 PM

I know feel my 20 bucks a month to BEZ has been validated. I know there are a lot of people that miss Dick Buckley's domination of Sunday on the station. But finally, a band I can relate to. Wilco, I love you baby.

jengiz, Oakland // Thursday, July 02, 2009 @ 11:43 PM

Oh man, the George Harrison thing. I can only say that I love this band and so does my wife and 2 kids, (3 & 6) and we've had blasts at both this years' and 2007 show at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley. But the George Harrison thing in the interview is a little weirder than what I heard in the interview. I don't think that song sounds like My Sweet Lord but I'll Fight, has been catching me with something, I think I have felt, it's quite like Soldier of Love which the Beatles covered in their early career but is one of the great Arthur Alexander songs. Anyway both great songs.

Jason Mashak, Prague, Czech Republic // Friday, July 03, 2009 @ 3:28 AM

Jeff, John, et al., next time you have a show in Dresden, surely you can hit Prague? We got Waits & Cohen last year (Dylan played a nearby small town) -- why no Wilco?

Brent c., Taipei, Taiwan // Friday, July 03, 2009 @ 10:31 AM

Yet another classic album from my all-time favorite band. I lived in Chicago from '95 to '08 and saw countless Wilco shows in those years (no better place to see a Wilco show than Chicago). I recently moved to Taipei. Wilco, I miss you...please come to Taipei so I can hear your sweet sounds live again!!! (only slightly serious, but oh how it would make my year if you toured the east).

Ray, Haddon Twp. NJ // Friday, July 03, 2009 @ 1:09 PM

Enjoyed this interview. I really love this band!!!! Wilco makes me smile & in today's world that is say alot!!!!

Juan Alfaro, Buenos Aires Argentina // Friday, July 03, 2009 @ 3:10 PM

Jeff, please pretty please come down to Argentina!

Mark, Music City, TN // Friday, July 03, 2009 @ 7:59 PM

Love the band, and their live shows, but this new album is very disappointing and this interesting interview supports my thesis that Tweedy is too comfortable these days, nearly complacent. The self-titled track *is* narcissistic; the band may smile at the lyrics, but I prefer when they wanted to challenged us, musically and lyrically, not just stroke us and themselves at the same time.

R. L., Raleigh // Saturday, July 04, 2009 @ 8:53 AM

Always glad to hear an interview with Jeff. The new album is a gem.

lorrie, chicago // Saturday, July 04, 2009 @ 12:14 PM

I love Jeff Tweedy, love Wilco, love this album!!!!!!

Brandon, Evansville // Saturday, July 04, 2009 @ 5:37 PM

I really enjoyed the interview. I think the new album shows a lot of growth and most interestingly to me will be how it all sounds live. So many songs take on a new life live especially from their most recent albums. For example, "Handshake Drugs", "Impossible Germany", and "Spiders(Kidsmoke)". Looking forward to seeing them in Michigan.

Dave O, Sydney, Australia // Sunday, July 05, 2009 @ 6:06 AM

Wow the streak continues! Wilco have now made four truly tremendous albums since YHF. If this is what "complacency" sounds like, then keep relaxing Jeff! Would love to have heard a few of those "Nels moments" stretch out a little longer, but otherwise another great album. Nice interview too!

Curtis, Lincoln Square // Monday, July 06, 2009 @ 9:04 AM

Wilco...Wilco...Wilco will love you baby.

Kate, the woods of NY // Monday, July 06, 2009 @ 5:14 PM

listened to the album four times in a row this weekend -- I loved hearing the interview and Jeff's take on some of the tracks -- he sounds like he's having fun:)

bernie, munich/germany // Monday, July 06, 2009 @ 5:16 PM

keep telling all my friends, that wilco is one of the greatest bands of our time. they start believing...when will we see you again in "impoosible germany"?

Gregg, Searsport Maine // Monday, July 06, 2009 @ 5:26 PM

Nice interview, but would have loved to hear Jeff talk about Jay Farrar and the new Son Volt CD, as the other half of the post-Uncle Tupelo world. Son Volt IS playing the Vic in Chicago on their tour.

Jeff, Chicago // Monday, July 06, 2009 @ 6:16 PM

They played a show on the 29th, last week Monday. Missed that one. But hey I was there for the Milwaukee shows, and the cover shoot! Great stuff all around, and the interviewer didn't act like a complete cretin regarding 'certain' questions. Not the greatest interview material, but Jeff handled it like a champ. Very eloquent and honest.

Ken, Sunderland England // Thursday, July 09, 2009 @ 7:04 AM

Chicago is one lucky city - Wilco are the one of the all time great bands - how everyone doesn't realise this I'll never know. Saw them in Lisbon May 31 - fantastic, going to Dublin in August can't wait. Love the new album, wish it was longer and yes more room for Nels to fly, but great by me.

Randy, Boston / MA // Sunday, July 12, 2009 @ 3:16 PM

It's Wilco's world. We just live in it.

Michael, San Francisco // Thursday, July 16, 2009 @ 1:28 PM

Wilco played in Berkley in June at the Greek Theatre (a great outside venue). The band was SO tight and played 29 songs for almost 2.5 hours. The last time I got to hear them play was about 6 years ago at the Great American Theatre. It was a last moment gig meant to tune them up for an Asian tour, they needed it since they hadn't played together in a while. If the rest of this tour is anything like the night in June, I would suggest moving mountains to hear them. The version of 'Impossible Germany' was amazing and I had hoped they would play it a second time! Jeff was so great with the audience and Nels was a magic musician. My wish is as they grow, they do not expand the venues. It would be great to see them in 10 years playing the same size venues just for a few nights in a row. (Tiring for them but great for us!) Thanks Wilco for exploring and inventing great music!
