Baguio City. Photo by Chi Balmaceda Gutierrez.
Some critics suggested that Burnham designed the city for the white elite. So just how inclusive was it? We also find out what Daniel Burnham was doing in the Philippines where he was commissioned to re-design Manila and build a summer capital called “Baguio City.” Part of the scope of the plan was to instill a sense of American authority in this former colony.

Guests:

Jan Metzger – Author of the forthcoming book, What Would Jane Say?

Kristen Schaffer – Associate professor of architecture and an urban historian at North Carolina State University, author of Daniel H. Burnham: Visionary Architect and Planner.

Rachel Bohlmann – Historian and curator of the exhibit Daniel Burnham in the Philippines

Paul Kramer – Professor of history at Vanderbilt University, author of The Blood of Government: Race, Empire, the United States and the Philippines
