The feud over parking meters has reached a neighborhood on Chicago’s far southeast side.
Most of Commercial Avenue has parking meters, expect for two blocks. But the free parking on those blocks will soon vanish.
The City Council has given the green light for the installation of meters between 87th and 88th avenues.
The streets are just blocks from the Indiana state line. Resident Rosa Perea says most residents and businesses don’t want the meters.
PEREA: We’ve talked to every single business on Commercial, two people say they want it. We don’t want any more meters and we’re opposing the meter rates that went up because we can’t afford it.
The head of a local business group says business owners do want the meters because of a lack of parking for customers.
10th Ward Alderman John Pope, who supports the parking meters, declined comment.
