Quinn Wants More Budget 'Urgency,' While Madigan Goes Easy on Tax Opponents

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn is warning of doom and gloom as the state's budget deadline approaches. He continues to negotiate budget cuts with legislative leaders, but says a tax increase will still be necessary.

Quinn says hundreds of letters will go out this week to human service agencies around the state, warning them of billions in cuts. The governor says the solution is a budget that includes some cuts, and an income tax increase, to balance the state's books.

QUINN: I am disappointed that we aren't having enough of - I think - urgency in dealing with a very serious calamity that's headed right to the good people of Illinois.

Fellow Democrat, House Speaker Michael Madigan, says he supports a tax increase. But he says lawmakers hesitant to vote for one are likely just hearing from their constituents...

MADIGAN: ...that are telling them, "Look, I'm out of work, or I'm working less hours than I was two or three months ago, and so I can't afford the tax increase."

Madigan and other legislative leaders met with Quinn Tuesday for more than three hours. They plan to meet again next week.

I hate to call Madigan a liar, but almost all the voters I have heard from SUPPORT a tax increase (you know: the people rallying, signing petitions, making phone calls, etc). I know that as a constituent I have directly contact my representative asking, begging in fact, that he support an income tax increase, and yet he still voted no.

so Madigan will put more people out of work by firing as many state employees as HE can. Too bad we can't fire him.
