Gary Goehl
In the 1970s, Gary Goehl was a right-hand man for the late Ed Rosewell, a former Cook County treasurer who was himself a right-hand man for Mayor Richard J. Daley. Rosewell pleaded guilty in 1998 to charges related to a city ghost-pay-rolling scheme. But he’d been tried previously for corruption in 1984, and was acquitted. Gary Goehl was also indicted for related crimes. He pleaded guilty and spent 18 months in prison rather than testify against Rosewell. Goehl now lives in Florida and is working on a memoir of his career in Chicago politics. He recently wrote an op-ed piece for the New York Times that drew comparisons to politics in Illinois today.
