Clinic Provides Free Medical Care in Rural Bolivia
|

|
The Centro Medico Humberto Parra clinic provides free healthcare to people living in rural Bolivia. Dr. Susan Hou and Dr. Mark Molitch decided to open up the clinic after Susan treated a Bolivian doctor at Loyola University. That patient became their partner in the project, and he helped the couple open the clinic in 2001.

I am recent Northwestern graduate who did an away rotation last year at the clinic. It's really an amazing place and provides free high quality compassionate health care to the local population. I know the clinic founders well and the clinic is always working to obtain to funds to keep operating. Thank you NPR for getting the word out about this wonderful clinic! I spent part of last spring working there and I think it's an excellent model for sustainable healthcare. So often, there are service trips that sweep into a region for a week or two and hand out medicine . . . then leave. The thing I love most about this clinic is that it has a continuing presence in the community and empowers patients to battle chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension. Thanks for shedding some light on this special organization.

My sister Lavinia has been helping out at the clinic for almost a year, and I know the work the clinic is doing there is really helping the locals. Great job and great photos!
