Northern Alberta’s Dirty Oil Threat to the Great Lakes Region

BP in Whiting, Indiana, is in the process of expanding its facilities there which refine heavy crude oil from Canada’s oil sands. The asphalt-like tar was once a big money maker for the city of Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada. There the world’s largest deposit of oil generated gasoline for half of all Canadian vehicles and 16 percent of the U.S. demand. But what appeared to be a boom for the town ended up destroying it environmentally, economically and socially. Journalist Andrew Nikiforuk is author of Tar Sands: Dirty Oil and the Future of a Continent and explains what's happening.
