Chicago City Council Approves Olympic Community Agreement
Produced by Natalie Moore on Wednesday, April 22, 2009

Chicago residents should get a slice of Olympic opportunity if the city lands the 2016 games. That’s the goal of an agreement passed today by the city council.
For several months, Chicago Olympic organizers, aldermen and community folk have been crafting a document.
It says 30 percent of Olympic Village units must be converted into affordable housing. And women and minorities have to win a share of Olympic-related contracts.
But there are skeptics. The next step is to ensure the binding agreement is followed.
Alderman Toni Preckwinkle helped draft the ordinance.
PRECKWINKLE: The price of victory is eternal vigilance. We have a document. And it’s our obligation as local elected officials to be sure that the Olympic committee makes good on its commitments.
The ordinance calls for an independent compliance committee to be formed. Members will determine if goals are met.
Chicago finds out in October if it’s the Olympic host city.
