Bookmark and Share Share

A term coined by Frank X Walker, Affrilachia defines writers of color in the Appalachian region. Affrilachia has become one of the largest literary movements to emerge from the American South. After 15 years of carrying the words and ancestors on their backs, the Affrilachian Poets were officially acknowledged and the word Affrilachia was authenticated in the Oxford American Dictionary. Listen to these award-winning writers of the Affrilachian Poets read from their work.

Speakers include: Mitchell L.H. Douglas, Parneshia Jones, Kelly Norman Ellis, Ricardo Nazario Colon, Ellen Hagan, Frank X Walker, and Stephanie Pruitt, with a special guest reading by National Book Award nominee Patricia Smith.

Recorded Thursday, February 12, 2009 at The Art Institute of Chicago-Morton Auditorium.
