Flights at Chicago's O'Hare Airport were down nearly five-percent last year. That's according to data released Wednesday by the Federal Aviation Administration.

According to the figures, flights at O'Hare decreased by about 45,000 in 2008. The numbers haven't been that low since 1994. David Field is the U.S. Editor of Airline Business Magazine. He says major airlines cut back a lot of flights last year to cut their losses.

FIELD: It's part of a larger plan to get fares up. If you reduce the number of seats for sale, if you reduce supply and demand stays the same, then prices go up. It really has not been a successful endeavor so far.

Field says O'Hare took a bigger hit than most airports because of large cut backs by United and American Airlines. Chicago's Midway Airport also saw a dip in flights last year. They were down about 38,000, or 12-percent.
