The Sun-Times Media group is shutting down 12 suburban newspapers. That’s as the company continues to cut costs amid weak advertising revenue.

The 12 weekly papers being closed are published under the Pioneer Press umbrella . The Sun-Times group bought that company in 1989. It puts out over 50 different papers in various Chicago suburbs.

But a Sun-Times spokesperson says the 12 being eliminated are unprofitable.

The Sun-Times Media Group is trying to cut annual expenses by about $50 million.

The company won’t say how many jobs will be eliminated by the move. But a union official tells Crain’s Chicago Business that 15 unionized positions are being targeted.

The 12 papers being eliminated as of January 15 are: the Algonquin Countryside, Arlington Heights Post, Cary-Grove Countryside, Des Plaines Times, Elk Grove Times, Hoffman Estates Review, Mount Prospect Times, Palatine Countryside, Proviso Herald, Rolling Meadows Review, Schaumburg Review, and Wheeling Countryside.
