Breathalizer Devices Required for Drunk Drivers in Illinois

Bookmark and Share Share

Beginning January 1, Illinois motorists convicted of drunk driving will have to take a breathalizer test in order to start their car. The new law makes all convicted drunk drivers install a device in their car to determine their blood alcohol level. If it's too high, the car won't start.

Susan McKinney is with the Secretary of State's office. She says despite some flaws, the law will be a big deterrent for anyone thinking of driving drunk.

McKINNEY: Is it a magical law? No. There's not one law that's going to end drunk driving in this country or in this state. It's going to take a series of laws and this is another law that will curb drunk driving for this group of people.

A spokesperson for the secretary of state's office says the law could affect 30,000 drivers. Mothers Against Drunk Driving rates Illinois poorly in its percentage of deadly alcohol-related car crashes.

2 Many Idiots Have Power, Bolingbrook // Sunday, January 04, 2009 @ 3:26 AM

MADD has waaaaaaay too much power. yeah, some people die from drunk drivers. my mom got creamed twice and suffers from permanent painful nerve damage on her right side. guess what: life sucks sometimes. doesn't mean that we should all lose more freedoms. furthermore, how does the state of IL FORCE-SELLING products to a captive market and then getting an EXTRA $30/mo help her nerves feel better? she doesn't get anything at all out of it. the corrupt mafia-like state of IL makes money off us once again to give to it's corrupt mafia-like politicians. we just sit back and continue to let this bloated govt and the ridiculously overpowerful overcompensating-moms-who-cant-deal-with-their-own-losses-and-instead-distribute-them-to-everyone MADD take away our freedoms. nice job everyone.
