Nuclear Power: What Do You Think?

Bookmark and Share Share

After hearing about one Illinois lawmaker’s efforts to lift the moratorium on nuclear expansion in the Prairie State, we'd like to hear your thoughts and concerns about the use of nuclear energy in your backyard. We recently talked with people at Federal Plaza in downtown Chicago and got some opinions about nuclear powers.

We also opened up the phone lines to hear people's thoughts on the matter. We have two experts to help inform the conversation.

Mark Peters is the deputy associate laboratory director for Energy Sciences and Engineering at Argonne National Laboratory. He’s also responsible for management and development of high level nuclear waste disposal at Argonne and has served as technical support to the senior department of energy management on the Yucca Mountain project. David Kraft helped found the Nuclear Energy Information Service. The group aims to educate the public about nuclear power and radiation hazards and energy alternatives.

Two important public meetings about Illinois nuclear issues are both taking place on Thursday, December 4th: Illinois Nuclear Power Issues Task Force, 9 a.m., State of Illinois Building, room 501, Chicago. The first meeting of what will be a year-long investigation into 5 important issues: reactor safety/security; reactor decommissioning; nuclear waste; reprocessing; the Illinois nuclear construction moratorium. U.S. Dept. of Energy meeting on the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership about reprocessing; 7 p.m., Holiday Inn Bolingbrook, 205 Remington Blvd., Bolingbrook IL. Public comments will be accepted. Like Albert Einstein our organization believes that the issues of nuclear powermust be decided by the citizenry, not well-funded vested interest. We hope you will attend. I was anti-nuclear a decade ago, but I have done a 180. We have uranium; Canada and Austrailia do too. It is an aption that we should put on the table. Let us take a lesson from France.

Could 848 be asking the wrong question! I'd like to know why the Republicans are having a 1964 high-school graduate spearhead this effort? What question should the community be really focusing our attention on instead?
