Green Lanes Coming to Illinois Tollway

Chicago-area drivers could start seeing Green Lanes on major tollways in a few years. The Illinois Tollway board Thursday approved the plan aimed at reducing congestion.

You may have seen them in other states like California or Minnesota -- lanes geared toward carpoolers and public transit. On the Illinois Tollway, anyone else who wants to drive in the lanes will have to pay an extra fee. Mary Sue Barrett is president of Chicago's Metropolitan Planning Council. She says Green Lanes are a great way to reduce congestion.

BARRETT: It's about using the infrastructure we have more wisely, we can't afford to build our way out of this problem, but we can squeeze more efficiency out of our infrastructure and pricing strategies is one emerging way to do that.

But some critics say more affluent drivers could take advantage of the lanes while leaving behind those who can't afford the fee. The Illinois Tollway plans to roll out the program starting in 2010.
