Emanuel's Constituents React to Congressman's New Job

Illinois Congressman Rahm Emanuel has accepted Barack Obama's offer to become White House chief of staff. And that leaves Illinois' 5th congressional district seat in limbo.

Emanuel's constituents in the 5th district re-elected to him to office Tuesday. Less than than two days later, he's decided to join President-Elect Barack Obama's administration. In Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, which is in Emanuel's congressional district, residents like Don Shapiro have mixed feelings about the situation.

SHAPIRO: I thought he was doing such a good job in Congress and it's so important to have that kind of representation when you live in a large city like Chicago. It's so easy to get lost in the shuffle. So I will be disappointed that he'll no longer be in that role. But you know you have to look a little more globally and look at the country as a whole and figure that it's for the best.

Despite his reservations, Shapiro says Emanuel will do a good job in the White House post. Emanuel has been in office since 2003.

Gee, what a surprise! Was there ever any doubt?

He will be the second most powerful person in the nation, but we will miss him and his family in the neighborhood.

As a 5th district constituent I am proud to have Rep. Emanual in the COS position. But his replacement has big shoes to fill.

Isn't he the guy who took welfare away from poor single mothers and is rabidly pro-Israel-genocidal-policies? I'm already beginning to regret my vote for Obama

There's less to Rahm then meets the eye. He's gotten far too much credit for the Dem. uptick in 2006 and no heat for his cowardly pro-war votes over the years.

Anyone expecting Obama to support a liberal agenda get prepared for disappointment. Obama will lead an American agenda for effective, efficient government and healing throughout the world. It will not be overnight and it's up to us. This is no time to sit on the sideline. This is only the beginning to the Change We Need.

Was he ever in the 5th?

Rahm barks loudly and gets credited for the Democratic gains in 2006, but is a pro-war, free trade fundamentalist. This pick alienates the progressive wing of the Democratic party, and undercuts Obama's message of Change and new politics. Chief of Staff is a very influential position, far from a desk job with a nice title. His team should have put more thought and time into this decision.

Rahm is a superb tactician with no vision. He'll be a perfect tool in realizing what we can only hope will be Barack's progressive agenda. Now let's get behind a reformer like Forrest Claypool before the corporatists force someone else on us.
