FEMA: Undocumented Immigrants Eligible for Flood Relief

Bookmark and Share Share

Some residents in Chicago's Albany Park neighborhood might not be taking advantage of federal flood assistance. Officials are especially concerned undocumented immigrants are keeping their distance.

Albany Park was hit pretty hard by Hurricane Ike-related flooding last month. Kim Anderson is a spokeperson for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. She says undocumented immigrants in the neighborhood should not be afraid to ask for financial help.

ANDERSON: Our focus here working in partnership with the state, county and local government is to reach out to everybody who is affected regardless of their social-economic background, the income they make and even if you're not a U.S. citizen.

Anderson says there are translators available at the relief center. The deadline to register is December 2.

I'm a chicago born citizen and I don't like my documented tax paying to go to undocumented non-citizens who pay little or no taxes and send money back to their country of origin. How many of those countries send fema type money to rescue us?Why are they hiding?Because they are ILLEGAL AND WE WANT TO GIVE THEM MORE MONEY TO STAY HERE????? Sounds political to me!!!!

Legal Alien, Skokie // Friday, October 24, 2008 @ 10:45 PM

I am an immigrant too, a legal one and I would like to inform you dear "born citizen" that many of those aliens legal or ilegal pay taxes. We pay taxes when we buy foo, when we buy gas, when we pay the mortgages, when we buy a car, a tv a computer, etc....So please don't tell me we don't pay taxes. They pay rent a nd contribute to the local economy sometimes more then many americans do. Those immigrants don't go to the unemployment agencies to colect a cec when they don't have a job, they don't stay on the street beging for change, they are on the streets asking for work....so lets be real and onest about the situation. As I said I am a legal alien, I graduate from college and I never asked for any help so far from government. Most of the immigrants are here to work and do a lot of jobs you wouldn't want to do and if you do you would want to make double the money which will increase the costs for the business owner and if he is raising the price you would't be happy as a costumer. Why do you think you have extremely cheep products at Wal Mart? Why do you think businesses afort to have huge sales, that americans love? because they are made in China, india, Pakistan, eastern europe, south america etc...where people are paid few cents an hour. You dont like immigrants or people from other countries ? Then you shouldn't like cheep products either. Do you think americans are willing to pay top dolars for stuff/ I don't think so. Go study some economics and figure out in what world do you live. The price of gas went up this summer and every american was complaining. Go to Europe to see how much would cost to fill up the tank. I just think we sould look around first before we are so convinced that immigrants, illegal or not, should not be helped.
