Today is the first day Northwest Indiana residents can start applying for federal disaster aid. Meantime, there’s a push to revamp a panel responsible for preventing flooding from the Little Calumet River.
The Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission meets next Wednesday.
Whether its director, Dan Gardner will be there, is still uncertain.
Several Northwest Indiana political officials, including Congressman Peter Visclosky, are calling for Gardner to resign.
They say Gardner hasn’t moved fast enough to complete a levy project along the river.
The river caused most of last week’s flooding damage. The project is 10 years overdue and will be $125 million over budget once it’s complete, supposedly in two years.
Beyond Gardner stepping down, critics are also calling for the entire 11-member commission to be revamped in order to improve efficiency and accountability.
Although he could not be reached for comment, Gardner has reportedly said delays in completing the levy are caused by a lack of funding and not having enough land.
