Today is the first day of school for most Chicago Public Schools students, but not everyone’s going. Many are gathering this morning at the House of Hope on Chicago’s South Side. From there, Illinois State Senator Rev. James Meeks will lead a trip to New Trier High School in suburban Winnetka. Meeks devised the boycott to put the focus on inequities in education financing. New Trier spends $17,000per student compared with $10,000 per student in Chicago.
Late last week, Meeks had offered to hold off on his idea to boycott urban schools on the first day of class. He offered a plan to audit and reform a dozen failing high schools in the Chicago region.
