Historian Frank Kusch interviewed eighty former Chicago police officers for his book, Battleground Chicago: The Police and the 1968 Democratic National Convention. He tells Chicago Public Radio’s Gabriel Spitzer that in the days leading up to the convention, the police were feeling pressure from all over. For one thing, events from earlier in the year—like the riots following the death of Martin Luther King Jr.—had Hizzoner on high alert.
