Along with their roots and politics, the presidential candidates’ patriotism has been under the microscope. In this case, those conversations coincide with the anniversary of our nation’s independence. The American flag has been both an icon and something of a measuring stick for patriotism from far back in the country’s history. Local filmmaker Phillip Koch explores the complexities of the flag’s history—and our relationship with it—in a new documentary airing tonight at 10 on WTTW/Channel 11. Eight Forty-Eight’s Alison Cuddy recently spoke with Koch, who says Old Glory was the people’s flag from the very start.
