Years before it was a marketing opportunity, Earth Day celebrated the dawn of modern environmentalism. That movement differed in basic ways from much of early conservationism, which focused on protecting certain animals and landscapes. In the '60s and '70s, environmentalists began pointing out the connections among species and ecosystems. Advocates say what we do as individuals can affect systems much larger than us. That introduces not just a scientific or political element, but an ethical one. For more on the ethics of environmentalism, we welcome Eight Forty-Eight’s resident philosopher, Al Gini.
