The U.S. Department of Education announced it would relax the No Child Left Behind plan for some states. The feds say too many public schools are failing under the law and it wants pilot a program that would give some states more leeway. Only ten states will be able to partake in the program. Matt Vanover is with the Illinois State Board of Education. He says Illinois is very interested in being one of the ten.
VANOVER: The punishment aspects of No Child Left Behind there really is not differentiation between districts that are making progress but may not be making adequate yearly progress, versus districts that are not making progress at all. And so what this would do is it would give more flexibility to those schools and students.
Under the new program, districts could focus more resources on schools needing drastic reform. It'd also means less intervention for schools making progress even if they still aren't meeting state standards.
