A Republican Congressional candidate in Chicago's far west suburbs welcomed support yesterday from one of the presidential front-runners. Dairy businessman Jim Oberweis received the backing of Arizona Senator John McCain.
McCain visited Sugar Grove for two reasons: one, to endorse Oberweis in his race for the 14th Congressional District, and, two, for a high-priced fund-raiser.
In a joint appearance, Oberweis compared himself to McCain, saying they both favor smaller government and want to crack down on illegal immigration. McCain, though, turned his attention to last week's shooting at Northern Illinois University.
MCCAIN: It makes politics and the things we do pale in comparison to the great tragedy that's taken place.
McCain renewed his call for mandatory prison time for any crime committed with a gun.
Meantime, Oberweis' Democratic opponent, scientist Bill Foster, criticizes both McCain and Oberweis for being in line with President Bush's pursuit of the war in Iraq.
