This month Chicago will experience a new way to view the crisis in Darfur. Leslie Thomas is a local practicing architect and is Founder, Director and Curator of the DARFUR/DARFUR Exhibit.

And Ron Haviv is a photojournalist and one of the photographers for the DARFUR/DARFUR exhibit. He’s author of the book Blood and Honey: A Balkan War Journal. Ron has covered conflict zones in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Russia and the Balkans. He’s currently in Tanzania.

DARFUR/DARFUR is a traveling exhibit of digitally-projected changing images that provide visual education about the richly multi-cultural region while exposing the horrors of the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

The event will present photographs taken in Darfur by former U.S. Marine Brian Steidle and other photojournalists accompanied by Sudanese inspired music.

Beginning October 7th, along with an indoor exhibit, DARFUR/DARFUR will show multi-media projections on the north facade of the Field Museum and will be indoors at the DuSable Museum of African American History in Hyde Park. Events will hosted at fifteen Chicago area locations including the Field Museum, multiple community arts locations and faith based congregations.

On October 8th, the public is invited to a free symposium entitled DARFUR: Imagery and Reality, which will explore cultural and family traditions alongside the humanitarian crisis in Darfur. A musical performance by the Chicago Children’s Choir will follow a panel discussion. The NGO Jewish World Watch will host a pre-symposium benefit surrounding their Solar Cooking Project and the advantages of solar cooking for the region.

And Leslie told Jerome where the idea for the Darfur/Darfur exhibit came from…
