Downtown Danger for Migrating Birds

The start of fall migration means more birds are flying through Chicago's loop. Many of them meet an unhappy fate. Chicago Public Radio's Sam Hudzik reports there are people waiting below to help.

They call themselves Chicago's Bird Collision Monitors. The volunteers survey the loop for sparrows, warblers and brown creepers. The birds are attracted by office lobby lights, trees and fountains - and then hit a wall of glass. Annette Prince is the group's director. She says live birds are put in a paper bag, and driven to a wildlife refuge for rest.
PRINCE: Many of the birds, and the majority of the birds, need no further treatment. They need the time to recover from what is essentially a mild concussion or a bump to the head.
Those are the lucky ones. Earlier this week volunteers found 50 birds downtown. Thirty were dead. Prince says her group is ready for the season, but still looking for help. Last fall they recovered close to 3,000 birds.
I'm Sam Hudzik, Chicago Public Radio.
